Hawaii Energy Reintroduces Exterior LED Lighting Incentive to Encourage Retrofit Projects
HONOLULU, February 25, 2015 – Hawaii Energy has modified its Exterior Light Emitting Diode (LED) Lighting Retrofit incentive in an effort to provide more savings to qualified business electric ratepayers.
Hawaii Energy, the ratepayer-funded energy conservation and efficiency program serving the islands of Hawaii, Lanai, Maui, Molokai and Oahu, transitioned its Exterior LED Lighting Retrofit incentive from the “prescriptive” (standard) program to the Customized Lighting program. In many cases, this will result in higher incentives due to the significant wattage reductions possible with LEDs and longer run times often typical with exterior lighting.
Effective immediately, business electric ratepayers can receive the following incentives for exterior LED lighting projects:
- $0.10 per kilowatt hour (kWh), plus $125 per kilowatt (kW) during peak demand times from 5 to 9 p.m., for projects with a useful life of 5 years or less.
- $0.15 per kWh, plus $125 per kW during peak demand times from 5 to 9 p.m., for projects with a useful life of more than 5 years.
“We are constantly striving to provide as much value as possible for businesses,” explained Larry Newman, Director of Business Operations, Hawaii Energy. “The technologies for LEDs just keep getting better and we want to encourage people to install the most energy-efficient products available on the market.”
In order to qualify for Hawaii Energy’s Custom Lighting program, lamps and fixtures must be listed on either Design Lights Consortium, ENERGY STAR® or LED Lighting Facts.
Lighting retrofits are one of the easiest and most effective ways for businesses to reduce energy consumption. Lighting can account for 20 – 50 percent of a business’ electric bill. The payback period for lighting retrofits can be as short as 1 – 3 years. The most common types of lights to replace with LEDs include incandescent, high pressure sodium and metal halides.
