Hawaii Energy, the ratepayer-funded energy conservation and efficiency program for Hawaii, Honolulu and Maui counties, provided Mauna Kea Resort (which includes Mauna Kea Beach Hotel and Hapuna Beach Prince Hotel) with financial incentives for installing energy-efficient light-emitting diodes (LEDs). Mauna Kea Beach Hotel received an incentive for $54,870 and Hapuna Beach Prince Hotel received $26,914 for a total of $81,784.

The incentive will help Mauna Kea Beach Hotel offset the cost of replacing older incandescent lights, halogens and fluorescent tube lights with LEDs. The LEDs were installed in areas that require 24-hour-a-day lighting such as the lobby and back-of-house service corridors. The lighting, installed by Axis Energy Partners, will help increase visibility and save the hotel an estimated 585,564 kilowatt hours (kWh) annually or $199,091 on electricity costs based on $0.34/kWh.

Similarly, Hapuna Beach Prince Hotel worked with Island Energy Systems to install LEDs in its lobby and parking garage. The energy savings is an estimated 160,361 kWh annually or $54,522 on electricity costs also based on $0.34/kWh.

Both hotels are planning additional energy-efficient upgrades within the next year. Recently, the hotels held Hawaii Energy-sponsored workshops for its employees called “Sharing the Aloha” with Helen Wai to encourage energy conservation at work and at home.
