$150,000 Incentive Awarded to Hawaii Prince Hotel Waikiki and Golf Club for Energy-Efficient Air Conditioning System

Posted July 07, 2014

Hawaii Energy, the ratepayer-funded energy conservation and efficiency program for Hawaii, Honolulu and Maui counties, presented a $150,000 incentive check to the Hawaii Prince Hotel Waikiki and Golf Club for upgrading its air conditioning system by replacing three energy-efficient enhanced chillers.

The system will provide cooling for the entire hotel that spans 541 all-oceanfront rooms on 28 floors as well as the lobby, banquet facilities, gift shops, cafes and all five of its restaurants.

Compared to last year, the amount of anticipated energy saved will be 1.2 million kilowatt hours (kWh) per year or an estimated savings of $288,000 on electricity costs based on $0.24/kWh. The installation of the system was completed in late March.

Since 2009, the Hawaii Prince Hotel Waikiki and Golf Club has worked diligently with Hawaii Energy on an Energy Feasibility Study to identify ways to save energy. The hotel also invested in various technologies such as new cooling towers with add-on variable frequency drives (VFDs), energy-efficient pumps and motors for its waterfall, light reflectors, parking garage ventilation with carbon monoxide monitoring system, lobby window tinting and light emitting diode (LED) lamps and exit signs throughout the hotel and golf club.

The hotel also held Hawaii Energy-sponsored workshops for its employees called “Sharing the Aloha” with Helen Wai to encourage energy conservation at work and home.
