HUI UP! REFRIGERATOR TRADE-IN PROGRAM
ONCE AGAIN HEADS TO MOLOKA‘I
KAUNAKAKAI, MOLOKA‘I–Sust‘AINAble Moloka‘iand Hawai‘i Energy are joining forces once again to deliver the Hui Up! Program to Moloka‘i in an effort to help island families lower their electric utility bills. Hui Up!is a community-based program powered by Sust‘AINAbleMoloka‘i, in partnership with Hawai‘i Energy, that provides Moloka‘i residents the opportunity to become more energy-efficient by trading in their old appliances in exchange for new ENERGY STAR®-certified models. Replacing an old refrigerator can save each household up to $400 per year on their utility bill.
“We are always excited about the opportunity to serve our community and help our residents lower their utility bills,” said Emillia Noordhoek, Executive Director of Sust‘AINAble Moloka‘i. “This program has already replaced over 350 refrigerators for Moloka‘iresidents and delivered more than 280,000 kilowatt hours in electricity savings, which is equivalent to over $100,000 in annual bill savings each year for Moloka‘ifamilies.“
“Our Moloka‘i community is challenged with some of the highest energy costs in the country. We at Hawai‘i Energy are proud to team up with Sust‘AINAble Moloka‘i to provide this customized program to address some of the unique challenges that Moloka‘i faces in accessing high efficiency refrigerators. These direct services will help Moloka‘i families significantly reduce their energy bills,” said Brian Kealoha, Executive Director at Hawai‘i Energy.
The sign-up period runs from July 1st to July 31st, 2017. Participation is on a first-come, first-served basis for families that meet the minimum eligibility requirements, with the first deliveries scheduled for the end of August. The program is offering a choice of a 17.5 or 21.2 cubic foot energy-efficient refrigerator from General Electric (GE) at a greatly reduced cost in exchange for their old, less efficient refrigerator. Once an applicant is accepted into the program, a Sust‘AINAbleMoloka‘i representative will schedule a visit with the participant to conduct an energy audit and share additional Hui Up! Program details. To apply for the Hui Up! Program, please visit http://www.sustainablemolokai.org/huiup4 or call Sust‘AINAbleMoloka‘i at (808) 560-5410.
