Hawai‘i Energy Announces Appliance Recycling Program And Rebate
HAWAI‘I ENERGY ANNOUNCES APPLIANCE RECYCLING PROGRAM AND REBATE
Rid-A-Fridge participants will receive $75 rebate with the option to donate it to the foodbank
Honolulu, Hawai‘i – Hawaiʻi Energy has announced a convenient way for residents to recycle their old, high energy-consuming refrigerators and freezers, which will also earn them a $75 rebate. The Rid-A-Fridge program encourages the surrendering of old, working refrigerators and freezers for recycling, to get these high energy users off the grid and to help residents cut back on their home energy usage. Participants can then opt to donate the rebate to their local foodbank. During the month of July, participants will also be entered to win a $50 Foodland gift card and a home energy kit, which contains a variety of energy saving tools.
“During these challenging times, many of us have spent a lot of time working around the house – cleaning, organizing, renovating or donating unwanted items,” said Brian Kealoha, executive director of Hawai‘i Energy. “It’s also time to consider getting rid of that old, working extra refrigerator or freezer that is increasing your electric bill. Our Rid-A-Fridge program takes care of recycling the unit for you. With the $75, that’s more money back in your pocket, or if you’re for ways to give back this season, donating it to the local foodbank helps to further their mission of providing much-needed assistance to Hawai‘i’s hungry.”
Since 2010, Hawai‘i Energy has recycled more than 400 units through its Rid-A-Fridge program that is available to residents of Hawai‘i Island, Maui County and O‘ahu. Participants will need:
- Contract ID# from utility bill.
- Information of old, working 14 cubic feet (or larger) refrigerator or freezer, including the make, model, serial number, age and size.
- Maui County and O‘ahu residents:
- Schedule a free pick-up by calling (808) 537-5577 or toll-free at 1 (877) 231-8222.
- The hauler will then pick-up the fridge or freezer and will submit the application on the participants behalf.
- Hawai‘i Island residents:
- Drop off unit to a Big Island Scrap Metal location and have them stamp and sign the Hawai‘i Island application.
- Completed application may be emailed to hawaiienergy@honeywell.com or mailed to Hawai‘i Energy, P.O. Box 3920, Honolulu, HI 96812.
Hawai‘i Energy has partnered with the Hawaii Foodbank on O‘ahu, the Maui Food Bank, and the Hawai‘i Food Basket on Hawai‘i Island to assist Hawai‘i’s hungry. Since the partnership began in 2012, they have donated more than $22,000. To donate, Rid-A-Fridge participants can simply check the “I’d like to make a difference” box on their application and the $75 rebate will go directly to their island’s foodbank.
Rebates will be mailed to participants within six to eight weeks upon receiving completed applications. Once all applications have been processed for July, Hawai‘i Energy will randomly select four winners to receive a $50 Foodland gift card and home energy kit, which includes an advanced power strip. Winners will be announced in August.
