Hawaii Energy Offers Energy-efficient Gift Ideas For The 2020 Holiday Season

With the holidays just around the corner, here’s how to give the gift of energy savings

Honolulu, Hawaii – As the holiday season quickly approaches, the experts at Hawaii Energy have compiled a list of useful, energy-efficient gift ideas to help friends and family save energy and money throughout the year.

“With people being more concerned about their electric bill this year than they have in the past, this is something you should take into account when doing your holiday shopping,” said Brian Kealoha, executive director at Hawaii Energy. “By purchasing gifts that are energy efficient, you’re not only making a positive impact on the environment, you’re also helping the person receiving the gift save energy and money in the long run.”

    Hawaii Energy’s 2020 Energy-Efficient Gift Guide, includes:
  • Air fryers: The amount of energy used is dependent upon multiple factors, including the brand, model and size. On average, air fryers use half the amount of energy than a conventional oven, making it more efficient to cook. It also cooks food faster, so you’re spending less time in the kitchen.
  • Air purifiers: Another hot ticket item due to COVID-19, this appliance has the potential to use a lot of energy, depending upon the amount of time it’s turned on. By purchasing an ENERGY STAR® certified air purifier, which is approximately 27 percent more energy-efficient than standard models, ensures the least amount of energy usage possible
  • Laptop computers or tablets: In comparison to a desktop computer, laptops and tablets are much more efficient because they can run without being constantly plugged in. According to ENERGY STAR®, the average desktop takes about 4 times the amount of energy to power it, in comparison to a laptop or tablet. Especially if you need to be on a computer for long hours, whether you’re working from home or attending online courses, switching from a desktop to a laptop or tablet can save you a lot of money on your electricity bill.
  • Espresso or coffee machines: Going out for coffee is often a nice treat, but when taking into account the amount of gas used and the disposable cup that the drink comes in, a coffee maker is still the reigning champion when it comes to sustainability. The amount of energy used depends on the type of machine, but a key factor to look out for when purchasing a new espresso or coffee machine is the ENERGY STAR® label. Better yet, opting for pour over or French press over a single serve machine is a more energy friendly option.
  • Xbox Series X: Despite the major upgrades, its energy consumption is similar to the Xbox One X. But like any game console, the amount of time it’s plugged in and being used determines the total amount of energy that’s being used, and how much you’re paying to run your system. If you’re giving or receiving this gift this season, you can minimize energy consumption simply by using a smart power strip, so that it’s not drawing unnecessary power when it’s not in use.

Aside from energy conscious tech gifts, there are plenty of other ways to stay sustainable and energy friendly over the holidays. Board games, a new plant, a shared experience are all great non-energy using gifts. And with the amount of waste generated from disposable wrapping products, using a reusable tote, cloth or newspaper are also great ways to have less of an impact on the environment.
