Hawaii Agriculture Research Center Affordable Housing Project

In partnership with HARC, and with the essential work of Clean Energy Allies, Hawaii Energy upgraded 23 Kunia Camp homes with energy-efficient measures through the Energy Smart 4 Home program. 43 Kunia Camp homes also received the installation of an energy-efficient ENERGY STAR® heat pump water heater. This alone has an annual bill savings of up to $500 per family annually, a big relief during this time of financial hardship

Residential Energy Champion: Rosalinde Ranne

During the pandemic, accelerated rebates for residents helped to alleviate up front cost for energy-efficient home appliances. Rosalind Ranne of Hilo received a $250 rebate through the Refrigerator Trade-Up program which helped her upgrade to a much-needed, new ENERGY STAR® energy-efficient fridge. Helping our schools with energy-efficient computers

In a joint effort with Kuauli Digital Opportunities Initiative, Hawaii Energy distributed 350 ENERGY STAR® certified Chromebooks to four public schools on Oahu and Hawaii Island. “Due to the pandemic, making distance learning a reality, the need for students and teachers to have access to technology is greater than ever,” said Brian Kealoha, executive director of Hawaii Energy.

Hilo-based grocery store, The Locavore Store, supports local farms and businesses by providing a centralized location for Hawaii-grown foods and goods. Previously using inefficient window AC units, they upgraded to a much more efficient split AC system, which will save them money for years to come.

Family-owned smoothie shop Jewel or Juice suffered a 50%+ drop in sales when COVID-19 hit, but energy costs remained the same, as their fridges and freezers still had to remain on 24/7. Energy Relief Grant funding allowed them to upgrade their fridges and freezers to more efficient models.
